We've Got Your Back

The first of Xpan’s Credo, We’ve Got Your Back is a promise of action. It is a commitment to how we show up for one another, how we serve our clients, and how we exist in the communities in which we work, live, and play. Rooted in humility and a desire to positively impact our world, this value lives at the heart of our culture. It is the number one attribute that Xpaners embody from the ground up and one that requires us all to continue to lead by example.  

It Takes Empathy and Courage

It requires us to start with ourselves and how we show up every day as we strive to bring this mindset to life. Empathy is the foundation when interacting with others, being present, truly listening, having situational awareness, and then leaning beyond the norm. If you notice something is ‘off’, you need to act, even if it is not in your job description. If you sense someone is struggling, offer support. In the famous book, “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse,” by Charlie Mackesy, when the boy asked the horse, “What’s the bravest thing you’ve ever said?” the horse replied, “Help.” Vulnerability is key to courage, and too often people struggle in a silo, trying to overcome challenges, when a solution is close by those around them.

As a team, this mindset is the glue that keeps our collaboration strong and consistent. Building learning solutions may seem easy, but it takes a great deal of critical thinking and collaborative effort to align learners, curriculum, media, and technology into a relevant Knowledge Experience (KX). It is often the little things: adjusting timelines to support shifting priorities, offering proactive recommendations based on project circumstances, real-time data, or long-time experience, or simply being a steady, dependable presence when the unexpected happens. These moments build relationships, which build lasting results.

Going Beyond the Workplace

Having each other’s back also blends into work/life balance as family, community engagement and flexible work schedules require a commitment from the team to remain healthy and happy in our lives. Our hope is that we can take this mindset into our communities to support those in need with meaningful action. It can be as simple as helping a neighbor carry their groceries, or volunteering at a non-profit to affect broader change. Xpaners receive one paid volunteer day each year to live out this value in a personal and meaningful way. As an example, in honor of Global Pay It Forward Day, several members of the Xpan team partnered with Rise Calgary, a local not-for-profit that helps over 1,300 Calgarians move from scarcity to strength through people-first support services. Together, they served hot dogs (and plenty of smiles) , while Rise Calgary shared resources and support to the community. A small act of kindness reflects our belief that real support creates a real impact.

Translation into Learning

We’ve Got Your Back is a core value in Xpan’s mission: to Engage, Educate, and Empower our world. Xpaners are advocates for each learner who consumes our training solutions; it is all about that one human on the other side of the knowledge solutions we produce. Humans are imperfect, and learning is not only difficult, but can also be messy and challenging. By having the learner’s back, we support a foundation of a user-focused learning experience, creating a space for learners to fail, correct, and grow. This is our meaningful purpose at Xpan and it is built on trust and care. With compassion and curiosity, we create educational experiences that are relevant and practical.
