Rise Calgary is a not-for-profit organization making strides in empowering their community through financial literacy and skill development programs, with a vision of creating a world with less poverty. Their work provides essential resources and knowledge that empower individuals to skillfully rise to life’s challenges.
As a volunteer-driven organization, Rise needed a streamlined process for inviting and managing volunteer engagement and onboarding, removing admin burden and ensuring alignment with its values throughout the process. Their workforce has a large range of digital literacy skills, so the technology solution required a thoughtful approach to avoid introducing barriers to access knowledge and resources. The project was a collaborative effort from the start as the teams from Rise Calgary and Xpan prioritized efforts that would add value in the short term without losing sight of the longer term. From here, Xpan identified and mapped out the different applicant groups (employees, volunteers, and practicum students) and aligned the relevant learning journey for each group, creating custom learning paths in Xact LMS.
The effort to preserve the legacy and culture of Rise Calgary as they began their digital transformation was crucial to the success of the Xact LMS implementation by Xpan’s software team. Implementation included custom branding, leveraging custom fields to organize learners and learning journeys, and setting up notifications and auto-allocations to reduce administrative efforts.
Next, Xpan planned the training journey, starting with Rise Calgary’s Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) course. We worked together to create scenarios and knowledge checks in the course to provide a more realistic and applicable experience. Next, we wrote new scenarios, including additional insights and tips, that would support new volunteers and staff to better understand how Rise Calgary lives out their values while working with clients.
As Rise empowers their community, Xpan too empowers its partners, providing ample resources for our everyone to feel confident navigating their Xact LMS site independently.
The scenario videos and Xact LMS platform were shared at the soft launch in November 2024, inviting community members to learn more about giving back with Rise Calgary.
This journey not only provided Rise Calgary with greater clarity on their values but also strengthened the bond between our teams in a way that will last well beyond this project. Seeing the real impact of our work – creating successful solutions while enabling the Rise Calgary Team to dedicate more time to their mission – shows just how powerful the right learning tools are in providing results without more admin work.
Since this was a completely new type of project for the Rise team, Xpan played a key role in guiding the initiative forward with thoughtful recommendations. Balancing between expert opinions and providing Rise Calgary the time to make informed decisions while ensuring key project elements were communicated clearly helped to keep the project timeline and budget on track.
This project offered a unique opportunity to develop learning programs and support the platform implementation simultaneously. The solution was designed with sustainability in mind, developed collaboratively to meet Rise Calgary’s current needs while remaining adaptable to future goals. Although it began as a comprehensive, custom learning solution, it was built to serve multiple functions and has already opened new opportunities for outreach and engagement beyond the original goals and scope.
